John Owens, NN6U, came to ham radio in 2020 as an adjunct to off-roading, but the ham hobby took over and now he uses his Jeep as a mobile shack to do contests and POTA activations from mountaintops and other fun (and RF-quiet) locations. He got bit by the contesting bug and has won a few section and division level awards from out-of-the-way places including #1 SF Section SOLP Sweepstakes SSB from a cabin in Clear Lake State Park for the last 2 years, #1 Pacific Division (#10 W/VE) Limited Rover in Sept VHF, #2 Northwestern Division Limited Rover in June VHF, #1 DX in NAQP RTTY operating QRP from a cruise ship, and has been the #3 Mobile in the California QSO Party for the last 3 years. He also has a modest home station that isn't going to win any contests, but helped him get DXCC, WAS, WAZ, WPX, WAC, and JCC-100. He is also grateful to the N6RO and K6MTU teams for giving him the opportunity to experience "big gun" world-class contesting.
